Prepare your body before you over-indulgence

Unless you’re Scrooge or you’re simply planning to hide in a cave this holiday season—then you don’t need to read this post.

It’s because I am going to bet (no matter how much you want to stick to a very strict weight loss program), you will allow yourself to overindulge during the holiday season. And please don’t beat yourself up if you do overindulge…because it is “unavoidable” (okay, if you have a better word that will appeal to your logical mind, then write me a message in the comment section below!). However, I won’t have the space in this post to argue with you that you can avoid not to overindulge this holiday season—because you can. But if you can’t, then I do have some tips on how you can prepare your body before you overindulge.

1.    Consider a pre-festive detox (Read the post I wrote on why you should detox)

A detox will allow you some space in your body when the festivities get under way. Before you put in the junk, de-clutter so to speak.  This way, your body can go through lesser adjustments, rather than more drastic measures when 2014 kicks in and you find yourself developing pockets of fat on your belly all of a sudden.

2.    Don’t forget to continue your exercise routine (if possible, bring it to the next level)

It doesn’t mean that if you have momentarily developed “amnesia” over your weight loss management rules on your calorie intake, then it will give you the excuse to forget everything else like your exercise routine.

Don’t forget that energy in=energy out is the ideal equation for maintaining our desired weight.

Exercising will prevent you from drifting into a weight loss plateau during the holiday season. Continuity is crucial. Read how to avoid weight loss plateaus and discover more.

3.    Remember to keep a positive mindset

It won’t do you any good if you keep on telling yourself every time you pick up a delicious goodie, “Why have I overindulged?” “I promised not to do it but here I am stuffing myself!” “I am doomed!” “I’ll go back to being overweight!” “It’s my fault!” “I can’t do it!” and on and on.  

This can lead to emotional eating on your part and you will most likely eat more. This can also decrease your motivation and energy to continue with the program you’ve started.

I am in no way encouraging you to waste away and ravish like someone who has been deprived of food for a decade. What I am saying is that when you can’t avoid the tempting and delicious food in front of you this holiday season, it’s okay. But be sure to prepare yourself if you can’t say “no.”

Motivation for quick weight loss

ID-100213980There are people who never seem to gain weight no matter what they eat. It could be genetics or something else. Don’t we just envy them?

For most people losing weight is not easy. And maintaining our desired weight is even more difficult at times.  

Although being healthy must be a lifelong goal, not an instant dream, there are times when we want to lose the weight quick. And there’s nothing wrong with that as long as we implement the right activities and diet to achieve it.

Here are some motivations for quick weight loss:

1.       Be realistic about your goals for quick weight loss 
Your long term weight loss success lies in setting a realistic goal at the start. Although, you want a quick weight loss, you'll be more likely to stick with a program if you don’t beat yourself up and concentrate on your health to create sensible eating strategies. Setting realistic goals will also motivate you to be confident to continue.

2.       Take small steps 
Weight loss success means making real lifestyle changes which may not be quick. But you can start off with the motivation of achieving a quick weight loss. But be sure to take small steps. Just like setting realistic goals which was already mentioned, the pacing of smaller steps will set you up for a longer journey towards a healthier you.  

3.       Don’t fool yourself that everything will be the way you want it to
Expect setbacks. In fact there’ll be more of these challenges the more you lose weight. Believe me, there will be times when you can’t say “no” to temptation and your weight loss will plateau. Just don’t forget to get back on track. It’s alright to fall from time to time. Just pick yourself up and keep on moving forward.

4.       Reward Yourself 
A quick weight loss program can entail real hard work. Don’t take the fun out of it.  Be quick to give yourself a reward as well every time you succeeded at a small feat. These rewards can inspire you to keep going.  Your rewards can be a massage, shopping for a new pair of jeans, or a hot bubble bath. Do something and be kind to yourself.

Well, we do a lot of cleaning and de-cluttering from the superficial level, why not clean your body from the inside and detoxify? That's right, to detoxify is to get your body clean and healthy which will result in a lot of positive ways especially when done in a healthy, safe and controlled environment. Detoxifying can help you in a lot of ways. Here are some of the reasons why you need to detox:

1. This will eliminate the toxins from the body.

Like it or not, all of us are exposed to a lot of toxins one way or another. These toxins may be environmental pollutants, cancer-causing chemicals, preservatives, pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial waste which are stored in our tissues and cells throughout the body. For your weight loss problems, do you know that you can feel lighter, healthier, more energized and focused if you detox your body? And no—I am not talking about detoxifying through artificial juices or herbal supplements, for they may not be the healthiest ways to detoxify. I am talking about the natural way—ways you can immediately implement in your lifestyle right now.

Remove the junk in your diet

The first thing to do is to "de-clutter" and remove the “junk” like processed foods, refined carbs and sugar from your diet. Without them and you'll have more energy through the day and you can say farewell to your afternoon slump.

If you want to start cleansing your body, it is important to eliminate the junk in your body first. Think of it this way, you can't start cleaning your closet if you still have a lot of junk inside. Take everything out, choose what to keep and what to discard. Otherwise, you will be putting the same things back in its place and you will never be able to get out of the cycle.

It may be painful the first few days. But in a few short weeks you will be feeling great and less bloated.

Vegify, organify and fruitify

Now that you've removed the junk from your closet (just kidding)—your diet, you can shift now to healthier  foods. Think of including vegetable, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and grass-fed, organic proteins in your meals.  Choose whole, fresh, organic, and all-natural foods.

Unlike taking in processed foods, when you "vegify, fruitify and organify", you will be taking in more nutrient-dense and free of preservatives and chemicals  foods which is great for your body.

And when you eat, make your plate look as colorful as possible. Add in more of the greens and the oranges to ensure you're getting a variety of vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals.

Drink lots of water

The foundation of detoxifying is water — lots of water.  Drinking lots of water will keep you hydrated, prevent constipation and assist your digestive system and liver — which are the key body parts of eliminating the unwanted waste and toxins.

Sweat it out

Sweating is one of the ways the body gets rid of the toxins. So engage in activities that you love which will get you to move.  When you're up and moving you will be reaping the benefits of like losing the pounds, increasing your energy, boosting your mood, more alert mind, keeps you from aging and helping prevent diseases.

Try to relax and rejuvenate your body

Food is only one part of the restoration process.  You would want to focus on the totality of your self. And you can rejuvenate in many different ways to detoxify. Are you one of those searching for ways to address the issue of weight loss?

The concern over losing weight has been there from time immemorial.Everybody wants to be fit. Even those with a thirty-four-twenty-four-thirty-four figure would most likely want to be thinner or at least maintain that size even through older age.

Reasons may vary and motivations may range from self-confidence to living a healthy lifestyle and avoiding illnesses. Getting fit and healthy is a serious goal. It is this motivation that a billion-dollar worth of industry exists to keep people fit and trimmed.

The weight management industry offers different solutions to the issue. There are those which are proponents of meal-based diet programs. Others propose lifestyle-based diet plans. There are also calorie-counting diet programs.While some people would opt for supplements which are easily accessible in the market.

In this post, I would like to focus on supplements and take a closer look at important points before you choose this solution to your weight problems.

First, do some research regarding the supplement you plan to take.Are you getting the nutrients your body needs? Is it a safe option?

This scene in a movie may be too familiar to you— an athlete preparing for his event. He takes in this meal in a glass before he takes off. He mixes this concoction of healthy foods. He puts everything into the blender. And his energy drink is complete. He goes to this event and wins the game.

Well, supplements can work this way. It can be a liquid-based diet replacing the ordinary meals or meal-replacement drinks and bars. Or supplements can be in the form of capsules made from natural and organic ingredients which one has to take before or after a meal.

Manufacturers of supplements claim that instead of taking in the ordinary solid food, supplements boast of a formula which combines the necessary nutrients the body needs.

And how do you loss the weight?

Well, formulas for supplements can function differently. One example is by decreasing the rate of digestion and the absorption of glucose. The stomach will give the feeling of being full for a much longer period of time hindering one from taking more food. Therefore, a person may take in anything he or she wants because of the high-fiber content dietary supplement which will flush out what he or she has taken in. One can argue that a person does not have to give up on the better things in life like food-tripping and taking in as much as he or she wants.

This is not a comprehensive description of what supplements are. But rather this is a cursory look at some of the claims supplements have to offer in the market. Your discretion is highly required. However, as a word of advice, please consult a health professional or a medical expert before taking in supplements for your weight problems.

While health and nutrition is crucial in discussing supplements, another point to consider is exercise.

Some people would choose to take supplements because they think they could get away with losing weight without sweating it out. Well, I can't blame them. After all there are supplements which do not focus on the imposition of exercise workouts or trainings to adhere to while in the program.

However, as a rule, one becomes successful if a fitness program includes physical activity. This is the truest natural way of flushing out the toxins in the body.

Supplements may pride themselves with the special ingredients which offer special effects. However, when it enters one’s body and flushes out what needs to be flushed out and binds whatever needs binding, still its role ends there. These supplements do not have a mind of their own to sculpt your body to your desired form.

The way to health, fitness and looking good does not completely depend on capsules or dietary bars. Sometimes, it is not the supplement that really matters. Supplements and replacements may be good. Supplements may assist in shedding off a few pounds. However, do they have what it takes to keep a person whose foe is his own self through time?The ultimate move lies within YOU.

The Dangers of Extreme Weight Loss

DangerA healthy weight loss is no more than three pounds a week according to health experts and medical professionals. In my other post, I wrote that it is not even how much you lose but how you lose it that makes it healthy.Change in lifestyle, the right mindset, a balanced diet and exercise remain to be the safest methods on how to lose the extra weight. It is also extremely important to consider how transformation takes its course. I mean consider an acorn before it becomes an oak tree—it takes time.

I do believe that anything that endures involves time. Losing weight requires time.

But here you are inspired by stories like Roger Bannister who became the first man to run a mile in under four minutes—when everybody thought it cannot be done—thinking, "I can do it. I can lose weight at a much faster rate and still be safe!"

To top it off, there are extreme weight loss methods that can lure youlike the Piper's music with the promise of losing as much as 20 to 30 pounds in just a couple of weeks.

It can be done! There's no question about it.

But before you do it, consider some of the dangers of extreme weight loss to your health:

Dehydration

In a healthy wealth loss program, water intake is very important. It is recommended that you drink water before meals to prevent you from overeating and to drink water during exercise to replace the fluids you lose.

In extreme weight loss programs, most of the weight you lose comes from water instead of losing fat and calories you gradually burn when you do a healthy weight loss plan. This can lead to dehydration which is very risky to your health.

Fatigue

Most programs for extreme weight loss will make you go through a very low-calorie diet. However, you will need a lot of energy in order to do daily activities and function normally which you may not sufficiently have because your body has been deprived of a sufficient amount of calories.

You won't only feel too tired and sleepy to do your regular routine, but you also won’t have the energy to exercise – which is one of the best and safest methods to lose weight.

Malnutrition

Since you are following a diet that's very low in calories, chances are you are not eating healthy and depriving yourself of the appropriate nutrients your body needs. Remember that a balanced diet consists of the right amount of protein, carbs, fats, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. A deficiency of these nutrients can lead to malnutrition and some serious repercussions to your health.

Mental and emotional difficulties

Studies show that those who go through extreme weight loss have problems with concentrating and trying to think clearly.It can be due to the lack of glucose required for the brain to function normally. Following a very restrictive diet can deplete your glucose and energy which can disrupt your mental processes causing the likes of a mental fog for instance.

Emotionally, one can also experience mood swings which can range from depression to irritability.

When you are tempted to go through an extreme weight loss, always bear in mind the old and simple adage, "Anything that is too much is bad!"

How much weight loss is Healthy to lose weekly?

Woman Measuring Her WaistSo, you have seen actors lose weight for a role they will be playing in a movie. In fact, some of them are really so scary, you would  question the safety of this  drastic weight loss on their health.

For instance, there's Christian Bale who lost a shocking 63 pounds for his role as a chronic insomniac in the film, The Machinist. And who would not be scared of seeing a once buffed Matthew McConaughey turned a scarecrow after he lost 38 pounds to play an AIDS patient in the movie, The Dallas Buyers Club. These actors were almost unrecognizable when they lost weight.

Is this healthy? How much weight loss is healthy to lose weekly?

Health professionals agree that a healthy weight loss is about 1-2 pounds per week. However, I will have to expand on this matter a little bit more.

You see, healthy weight loss is not as simple as how much you lost but how you lose it. Losing 1-2 pounds per week can be unsafe because of the way in which you lose it.

Take a look at some factors to be considered:

1. How much do you weigh and how much do you have to lose?
There's a big difference between a person weighing 180 pounds with the goal of losing  20 pounds in one week from someone who weighs 380 pounds and lose 20 pounds in one week. You need to consider the large amount of water weight you would lose during the week.  While the former may be unhealthy if you push it, the latter is plausible.

2. How much time do you have to spend in losing the weight? I presume you don't have all day to work out and lose the weight. You may have a job and other responsibilities that will make it difficult for you to burn enough calories to lose a few pounds in one week. You can't go on your routine for three days and spend the whole two days losing weight, can you?

3. Consider your current fitness level. If you are not exposed to training and exercise, you'll likely injure yourself in the process. It is crucial that you know your physical capability to begin an exercise program. Do not aim for a very aggressive exercise regimen and push your fitness level beyond the limits.

Of course you can go beyond the "healthy" recommendation of 1-2 pounds per week. Just don't forget that losing weight quickly has its disadvantages from muscle loss, nutritional deficiencies, loose skin  and even potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmias,

And besides, majority of people who lose weight fast, gain it back even faster. Think about it, do you want something short-term like losing 10 pounds in one week and gain it back right away or lose 10 pounds in one month which can stay for good?

The idea is to love your body—that's why you want to lose weight in the first place, right? Losing weight is not a race. Unless you are in a reality tv show. And if you are convinced that it is, remember that the turtles always win! (wink)
