One of the commonly asked questions about weight-loss surgery is, “Which procedure is right for me?”

The thing is it comes down to you knowing what you think you need. You are the best decision maker on which weight loss surgical procedure to choose. If you are a good candidate for surgery, then very likely you could do well with any weight-loss operation.

Now, there are several different operations that are currently available to address weight loss problems such as gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy.

In general, gastric bypass patients will lose around 70 percent of their excess weight, sleeve gastrectomy patients will lose around 60 percent, and gastric banding patients will lose around 50 percent.

In choosing a weight loss surgical procedure, consider the following:

  • The surgeon’s competency – there are various resources accessible now a days to look into somebody’s credibility. Ask previous patients and testimonials. Look at the surgeon’s track record for these kind of procedures. Ask for referrals from people you know and trust.
  • Ensure that there is an aftercare program – the surgical procedure is not the be-all and end-all of everything. In fact, this is only the beginning for you and a lifestyle change.   An aftercare program that focuses on dietary, behavioral and exercise changes will be of great help not only for your recovery but also for you to maintain the change after the procedure.
  • You are willing to work WITH the operation – as I have mentioned, you are the most important aspect of any weight loss surgical procedure you will undergo. No matter what procedure you choose, at the end of the day, the most crucial thing is getting you to use your weight-loss operation to implement lifestyle changes. The weight loss surgical procedures only serve as an instrument to help you. But the rest is up to you. It all depends on how well you follow up on the procedure and implement on all the necessary lifestyle changes to make the change for the long-term.
