Detox after Christmas and New Year Festivities

Posted on: January 7th, 2014 by Hayley James No Comments

ID-100188920The revelry has come and gone and now you feel like— well, hopefully nothing has changed at all. But when you looked at yourself in the mirror, you’re suddenly convinced you’ve indulged too much during the holidays. And when a friend echoes what you thought you saw and tells you, “You’ve gained weight!” You begin to worry a little bit.

But here comes the last straw…you tried on a pair of jeans and you needed to hold your breath, roll over a few times (turn a little blue fom holding your breath for quite some time) zip them up, only to feel they don't fit you anymore.

That’s when you really fret and join the herd in the gym. While the seasoned gym goers are complaining because membership sign-ups are going higher and gyms are packed with people who are intent on keeping a head start on their New Year’s resolution.

Usually though, two weeks after, 95% of them are never seen again. I hope you are not one of them because yours is an intention for a healthier lifestyle—which is long-term.

Now, here are ways to help you detox from the holidays and kick-start your whooping healthy lifestyle for 2014 and onwards.

1. Drink lots of water

Taking in water will help cleanse your system and flush out the toxins to get you back on track to a healthier you.

2. Exercise

Sweat it out! Try a class like Zumba, dancing, kickboxing, aerobics, step aerobics, yoga, Pilates. If you don’t want to wrestle with lots of gym-goers in January, try running, jogging, walking, biking right in your neighbourhood.  Sweating out the excess calories and toxins from the holiday is a great way to detoxify the body.

3. De-clutter your thoughts

You also need to silence your mind and get back into focus. Being healthy has a lot to do with a good and healthy mindset. Incorporate meditation into your activities and de-clutter the negative thoughts and the noise you still have after the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

4. Add Healthy Foods back into your system

Try to add the healthy foods before you overindulged during the holidays back into your diet. Get at least five fruit and vegetable servings in a day.

Prepare your body before you over-indulgence

Unless you’re Scrooge or you’re simply planning to hide in a cave this holiday season—then you don’t need to read this post.

It’s because I am going to bet (no matter how much you want to stick to a very strict weight loss program), you will allow yourself to overindulge during the holiday season. And please don’t beat yourself up if you do overindulge…because it is “unavoidable” (okay, if you have a better word that will appeal to your logical mind, then write me a message in the comment section below!). However, I won’t have the space in this post to argue with you that you can avoid not to overindulge this holiday season—because you can. But if you can’t, then I do have some tips on how you can prepare your body before you overindulge.

1.    Consider a pre-festive detox (Read the post I wrote on why you should detox)

A detox will allow you some space in your body when the festivities get under way. Before you put in the junk, de-clutter so to speak.  This way, your body can go through lesser adjustments, rather than more drastic measures when 2014 kicks in and you find yourself developing pockets of fat on your belly all of a sudden.

2.    Don’t forget to continue your exercise routine (if possible, bring it to the next level)

It doesn’t mean that if you have momentarily developed “amnesia” over your weight loss management rules on your calorie intake, then it will give you the excuse to forget everything else like your exercise routine.

Don’t forget that energy in=energy out is the ideal equation for maintaining our desired weight.

Exercising will prevent you from drifting into a weight loss plateau during the holiday season. Continuity is crucial. Read how to avoid weight loss plateaus and discover more.

3.    Remember to keep a positive mindset

It won’t do you any good if you keep on telling yourself every time you pick up a delicious goodie, “Why have I overindulged?” “I promised not to do it but here I am stuffing myself!” “I am doomed!” “I’ll go back to being overweight!” “It’s my fault!” “I can’t do it!” and on and on.

This can lead to emotional eating on your part and you will most likely eat more. This can also decrease your motivation and energy to continue with the program you’ve started.

I am in no way encouraging you to waste away and ravish like someone who has been deprived of food for a decade. What I am saying is that when you can’t avoid the tempting and delicious food in front of you this holiday season, it’s okay. But be sure to prepare yourself if you can’t say “no.”

Toxins are in the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe.  It is everywhere. We can not avoid them. Fortunately, our body has a built-in mechanism to fight them off. But there’s only so much the body can do. It needs a bit of assistance from us. That's why we need to resort tonatural body cleansing.

Body cleansing is used around the world for mental and physical purposes.  Unlike detoxifying which is an intense and longer cleansing program which addresses specific toxins and areas of the body, body cleansing is usually done without necessarily abstaining from food.

You can read more about the 5 reasons to detox and 5 ways to detox.

So how can the body eliminate the wastes and toxin build-up?

Although the body is really functioning as one, the major organs involved are as follows:

1. Colon – helps in disposing the bowel from the liver

2. Lymphatic System – transports wastes and toxins from cells and the circulatory system to each of organs involved in the elimination of toxins from the body for proper elimination

3. Skin –toxins are eliminated by sweating

4. Kidneys – process waste products from the blood, toxic substances in the urine and water-soluble toxins from the liver

5. Lungs – filters and purges toxins through breathing

6. Liver – changes destructive toxins into less harmful substances that the colon and kidneys can eliminate

Here are the benefits  of body cleansing which can improve your overall well-being.

Good for losing weight

The majority of people who go through body cleansing experience weight loss. When you go through body cleansing, you rid yourself of the extra toxins and wastes which can be good if you want to start a weight loss program.  Getting rid of the build-up helps your body shed off the unwanted pounds.

Improved sleep

Of course, if you remove the unhealthy build-up which causes unhealthy sleeping habits, insomnia and even chronic fatigue, you can expect to sleep soundly and restfully.

Good for keeping a clear and youthful-looking skin

The skin helps in eliminating wastes and toxins. When you go through body cleansing, you will be removing the unwanted materials that clogged your pores. This can lead to clearer and healthier-looking skin.

Boost your immune system

Eliminating the toxins and wastes inside your body through body cleansing allows your immune system to do its function better and stronger— to fight off diseases and infections. The immune system becomes free to handle the everyday threats against it.

Helps regulate digestion

Through body cleansing, you eradicate the toxic build-up which weighs down your digestive system. As you cleanse your body of the wastes, you put it back on track for healthy and regular digestion, restoring the natural rhythm of the digestive tract.

5 reasons to detox

Do you take a bath?

Do you brush your teeth?

Do you clean your house?

Do you clean your car?

Do you clean your closet?

Well, we do a lot of cleaning and de-cluttering from the superficial level, why not clean your body from the inside and detoxify? That's right, to detoxify is to get your body clean and healthy which will result in a lot of positive ways especially when done in a healthy, safe and controlled environment. Read the 5 ways to detox to know how.

Detoxifying can help you in a lot of ways. Here are some of the reasons why you need to detox:

1. This will eliminate the toxins from the body.

Like it or not, all of us are exposed to a lot of toxins one way or another. These toxins may be environmental pollutants, cancer-causing chemicals, preservatives, pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial waste which are stored in our tissues and cells throughout the body. These elements can affect our bodies in terms of metabolism, behavior and immune system which can lead to diseases like cancers, neurological diseases, heart disease, strokes and more.

But don't fret! Our bodies can heal itself because we are gifted with built-in warriors to deal with these dangers.  The problem is our immune system may be overloaded making us vulnerable to fight off these harmful elements.

Detoxifying assists and improves the natural functions of our bodies by strengthening our  immune system to function properly and fight off diseases.

2. This is a good way to lose weight.

As mentioned above, the toxins inside our body can affect our metabolism and our ability to burn fat. When the body eliminates the toxins especially the ones stored in fat cells through detoxifying our metabolism increases which can lead to losing the extra fats.

3. Detoxifying is a way to slow down aging.

Just like the toxins that detoxifying can eradicate, it can also rid the body of free radicals and heavy metals which can be responsible for aging. Detoxifying assists in increasing nutrient absorption particularly antioxidants and vitamins which are good elements to fight stress.

Detoxifying is also know to improve one's skin quality, strengthens hair and nails and gives us a natural, healthy glow.

4. It increases energy and improves quality of life.

With the heavy baggage of toxins gone, you can expect to feel lighter and have more mental, physical, and emotional energy after detoxifying. Studies show that detoxifying leads to healthier sleeping habits and increased energy.  Thus, detoxifying can tremendously improve your outlook and behavior towards life.

5. Restores balance to our body's system leading to mental and emotional clarity.

We would want all our body systems working harmoniously together. Without clogging its ways to function properly, after getting rid of the unwanted toxins, detoxifying can give us the balance that we want and need.  And when the body's systems are aligned, a radical shift in our well-being encompassing our mental and emotional states also occurs.

With the restoration of balance, we're clear and grounded and we can see better and deal with more things. We can make better judgment, analyze things clearly and see things in a more positive perspective.

The risks of developing obesity in childhood

Posted on: September 24th, 2013 by Hayley James No Comments

ID-10063993Do you have a child who is suffering from obesity?  Being overweight and obesity can be treated in childhood. It may be reversed or prevented.  If you don't address this problem, your child is a likely candidate to be obese or overweight as an adult. Or worse, your child has an increased risk to develop various health problems. It can also lead to social and emotional complications which can affect the well-being of your child.

Some Health Problems involving obesity in childhood

  • Type 2 diabetes -  affects how your child's body metabolizes sugar (glucose). Type 2 diabetes can often be reversed by eating healthier foods and exercising.
  • High cholesterol and high blood pressure -  lead to the buildup of plaques which can cause a narrowing and hardening of the arteries this can lead to a heart attack or stroke later in life.
  • Asthma and other breathing problems.  Due to the excess weight on your child's body, the development and health of your child's lungs can be impaired
  • Sleep apnea – this is just one form of sleeping disorder which your child can suffer from because of obesity.  Your child may snore or have abnormal breathing when he or she sleeps
  • Early puberty or menstruation- obesity can create hormone imbalances for your child which causes puberty to start earlier than expected.

Some Social and emotional problems involving obesity in childhood

  • Low self-worth – an obese child is often the target of  bullying and teasing which can have a great impact on his or her self-esteem  and self-worth
  • Learning problems- there's a tendency for an overweight child to have school-related anxiety which can lead to declining academic performance.
  • Depression- with a very low self-worth coupled with the health complications from being obese, this can be very overwhelming for a child which could lead to depression.

To address the issue of obesity in childhood, one must look into the changes that can be made to the child's lifestyle. It will be best if the whole family cooperates with the changes to be made.   This will also be advantageous for other members of the family who are overweight.

Encourage your child to eat more healthily and engage in a variety of physical activity. Make the small changes gradually for there is a higher rate of success with your child adapting to these changes  in the long-term.

The child would want to see a role model and you as a parent can make a big impact.  You can help him or her to stay healthy. Be involved as much as possible in helping your child make these changes.  Monitor the changes and discuss these with your child.  And don't forget to encourage and reward him or her for the small achievements made.

The 5 ways to detox

Posted on: September 19th, 2013 by Hayley James No Comments

For your weight loss problems, do you know that you can feel lighter, healthier, more energized and focused if you detox your body? And no—I am not talking about detoxifying through artificial juices or herbal supplements, for they may not be the healthiest ways to detoxify. I am talking about the natural way—ways you can immediately implement in your lifestyle right now.

Want to know more? Here goes:

Remove the junk in your diet

The first thing to do is to "de-clutter" and remove the “junk” like processed foods, refined carbs and sugar from your diet. Without them and you'll have more energy through the day and you can say farewell to your afternoon slump.

If you want to start cleansing your body, it is important to eliminate the junk in your body first. Think of it this way, you can't start cleaning your closet if you still have a lot of junk inside. Take everything out, choose what to keep and what to discard. Otherwise, you will be putting the same things back in its place and you will never be able to get out of the cycle.

It may be painful the first few days. But in a few short weeks you will be feeling great and less bloated.

Vegify, organify and fruitify

Now that you've removed the junk from your closet (just kidding)—your diet, you can shift now to healthier  foods. Think of including vegetable, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and grass-fed, organic proteins in your meals.  Choose whole, fresh, organic, and all-natural foods.

Unlike taking in processed foods, when you "vegify, fruitify and organify", you will be taking in more nutrient-dense and free of preservatives and chemicals  foods which is great for your body.

And when you eat, make your plate look as colorful as possible. Add in more of the greens and the oranges to ensure you're getting a variety of vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals.

Drink lots of water

The foundation of detoxifying is water — lots of water.  Drinking lots of water will keep you hydrated, prevent constipation and assist your digestive system and liver — which are the key body parts of eliminating the unwanted waste and toxins.

Sweat it out

Sweating is one of the ways the body gets rid of the toxins. So engage in activities that you love which will get you to move.  When you're up and moving you will be reaping the benefits of like losing the pounds, increasing your energy, boosting your mood, more alert mind, keeps you from aging and helping prevent diseases.

Try to relax and rejuvenate your body

Food is only one part of the restoration process.  You would want to focus on the totality of your self. And you can rejuvenate in many different ways to detoxify. For instance, take a good night's rest to repair and restore your body. Then, develop a cheerful attitude and a positive mindset to help you feel calm, loose, and centered. Do meditation or yoga if you like.

Are There Benefits of Detoxing For Fast Weight Loss?

Posted on: April 5th, 2013 by Hayley James No Comments

Ok, so you want to lose weight?  Although exercise and a healthy diet are the best approaches to take, cleansing your body first by way of a body detoxification could be the best way to start.

There are many ways to detox your body so before you start a body detox plan, it is important to know your options.  These options include water fasting, juice fasting, the soup cleanse, the use of detox pills and patches, the consumption of all-natural foods, to name a few.

Although these methods are popular as they can help you achieve a quick weight loss,    fasting is not right for everyone and it is advisable to consult with your medical practitioner first, before embarking on any method of weight loss.

When detoxing it is important your body still receives needed nutrients.  For that reason, it is recommended should you choose a juice fast, or water fast you detox for no more than five days or more.

Your weight loss success on a detox diet will also depend on what your current weight is.  The more you weigh, the easier it will be for you to lose weight.  For example, if you are 20 pounds overweight, you may lose weight on a detox diet.  However, if you are at a healthy weight, you may not lose any weight at all.

Once your detox period is finished you will most likely need to make some life-style changes in your food options or the weight you have just lost can return just as easily.  By making healthy food choices, eliminating foods high in sugar, fats, and calories and combining this with a regular exercise regime, you can maintain a healthy weight for years to come.

So, although you can lose weight on a detox diet, your results may vary and your weight loss may only be temporary.  We suggest you adopt a combination of healthy eating and exercise as a way of life as opposed to a quick fix.
